Here are the basics to staying safe on SoundCloud:
1. Choose astrong, unique password (and keep it to yourself).
2. If you come across any suspicious links in messages, comments or any other areas across the site, be wary, andnevergiveout your log in information unless you are on www.soundcloud.com. 3. Do not trust services promising to increase your followers, plays, favorites, or that will make you money.
4. Be wary of phishing attempts
As we mentioned previously, choosing a strong password is crucial for keeping your account safe in the 'Cloud. So, what exactly is a strong password you may ask?
We recommend following one of these two approaches:
- Choose a random string of at least 8 characters, including upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters. Do not use your name, date of birth, part of your email address, login or other personal information, or common words that could be found in a dictionary. One of many approaches to this would be to pick the first letter of each word of a song you like - for example, for "You're the first, the last, my everything!", that might be "Yt1,tl,me!".
- Choose a passphrase comprised of multiple (at least 4) words that are more easy to remember, but make no sense whatsoever. Do not use movie titles, proverbs, or other commonplaces - but stick to real randomness! For an inspirational example of this strategy, have a look at XKCD's brilliant comic on password strength.
If you want some help managing your passwords, we recommend tools such as 1Password and LastPass.
But remember, don't use the same password across multiple sites, and keep your password to yourself - without exception!
Ever heard of phising attempts? (it's got nothing to do with fish....)
When somebody sends you a link (maybe in a message, comment, email or the like) trying to get you to enter your SoundCloud password on a site outside of the soundcloud.com domain (it may still look like soundcloud.com) we call that phishing. It facilitates the malicious sender to use your account credentials to hijack your account, and use it to send out spam or more phishing attempts.
Therefore, be sure to never give out your log-in credentials to any third-party providers, and always double-check the URL in the adress bar of your browser to make sure you are logging in to soundcloud.com, and not an unrelated/misspelled domain - no matter who has directed you there.
If you think your SoundCloud account has been phished, log in to your profile, and reset your password immediately.
If you are unable to log in and feel your account has been compromised, please contact us on trust[@]soundcloud[.]com and we will get back to you as fast as possible!
To avoid abusive behavior on SoundCloud, we’d like to remind you about our Community Guidelines which you agreed to when signing up for an account. The SoundCloud Community is a positive, constructive environment. If you come across something you disagree with the best way is to just ignore it. Remember, people have different perceptions of what’s acceptable. Always consider how your audience will interpret what you’re sharing. Don’t be that guy/gal.
If you receive unwanted communication from another user, the first thing to do is Mute and ignore them. Ending any sort of communication with them will most likely resolve the situation. Learn how to Mute a user on this Help topic.
If this unwanted communication continues, and you feel a word from our Community team could help then do let us know so we can try and help.
But, if this communication goes beyond the point of personal conflict and turns in to harassment, and actual violent threats, then you should get in contact with the police as well as letting us know. Please also make sure you speak to a trusted individual about what’s happening, such as a friend or relative.
Remember, what’s acceptable to one person, may be shocking to another. Offensive material is subjective, and we advise if you do see/hear something you don’t agree with that you ignore it and Mute the user who’s uploading it. If you can’t avoid the material because it’s personal and directed towards you, or a certain person, or is likely to cause offence to a broad section of the community (for example, racist or homophobic comments) then let us know and we can take things from there.
As mentioned in our Terms of Use, you must not use the platform to upload any offensive content, (which is down to SoundCloud’s reasonable discretion). We don’t pre-screen content, but we reserve the right to remove anything reported to us that we deem to be unacceptable or is otherwise in breach of our terms of use and community guidelines.
No one likes a bully. If you have a personal conflict, then deal with this offline in a responsible manner. The SoundCloud Community is a positive and constructive place. If you don’t like someone’s sound, let them know how it could be improved constructively, don’t just put them down for no reason. What you may dislike, another user may think is great, and that’s just the way it works! Learn from other community members about growing your community in a meaningful way.
Here at SoundCloud, everyday we hear about users who have made great connections using the platform and have built up massive followings around their sounds. The way they’ve done this is by building meaningful connections based on mutual respect. They’ve done this by connecting with their followers, not by sending out mass messages and posting the same comments to everyone they follow. Again, don’t be that guy/gal. Trust us, it doesn’t work.
Receiving impersonal canned messages or a comment which you can see has been posted to every other sound the user’s listened to, isn’t very personal and will most likely be ignored and deleted! Remember to connect with the community to build up your own following. Here’s a few tips from other SoundCloud members which we put together to help out. Create more value than you extract. That’s how communities flourish.
In our terms of use we forbid the use of any automation to generate messages, generate accounts, play audio content, generate comments, follow/unfollow users or favorite any content or post any activities. If you are found behaving in this manner, or using a service to facilitate such activity, your account will be reviewed with the risk of being removed.
