How Does Sales Tax & VAT Affect My Subscription?

Are taxes included in my SoundCloud subscription?

Taxes on your SoundCloud subscription depend on where you live. In certain regions, taxes are included in the subscription price, while in others, they may be added separately.

  • In the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand, VAT (Value Added Tax) is included in the advertised price.
  • In the US, some state and local governments require sales tax to be collected on top of the advertised price. This sales tax is added at the point of transaction, which might result in a slightly different price on your receipt compared to the advertised rate.

To see the exact details of what you're being charged, you can check your receipts by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Subscriptions page.
  2. Scroll down to “Purchase history.”
  3. Select the order to view the receipt.

Why didn’t you charge me tax before?

If you weren’t charged tax on your original purchase but are now, it's because the laws in your jurisdiction have changed, requiring us to add sales tax to your price. This change was automatically applied to your account, and the tax rate may vary based on local laws.

How do you decide how much tax to charge me?

The amount of tax charged is based on the tax laws of the location where you live. SoundCloud determines your location using the country and ZIP Code you provided when you purchased your subscription. If you've moved since purchasing your subscription and need to update your payment details, please contact our support team.

What happens if an added sales tax becomes required for my location?

If the sales tax is newly required for your location, this change will be automatically applied to your account. You don't need to take any action to accept this; simply continue using SoundCloud as usual.

I never agreed to that price. Can I get a refund?

Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds based on changes to tax laws in your jurisdiction. The decision to impose sales tax on your purchase is made by your state or local government, and not by SoundCloud.

Additional examples of tax scenarios enhance understanding.

Here are more examples of how tax scenarios might apply could help users better understand their specific situations. For instance:

  • Example 1: If you live in New York and purchase a SoundCloud subscription, New York state law requires a sales tax added to your subscription price at checkout. This results in a slightly higher total than the advertised price.
  • Example 2: If you reside in Germany, VAT is included in the subscription price, so the price you see advertised is the final amount you'll pay, with no additional tax added at checkout.
  • Example 3: If you moved from a location with no sales tax to a location where sales tax is required, your SoundCloud subscription will automatically adjust to include the required tax based on your new address.
