Choosing A License For Your Track

  1. What are the options for licensing my track on SoundCloud?

    • You can choose to have your track be "All Rights Reserved" or available through "Creative Commons" via the track's Metadata tab.

  2. What does 'All Rights Reserved' mean for my track?

    • "All Rights Reserved" means that copyright is automatically granted to you when you begin creating your work. You don't have to file anything or publish your work online to own the copyright of your music. By choosing this option, you are requesting that other creators do not use your material without permission.

  3. What is Creative Commons, and how does it work?

    • Creative Commons licenses allow creators to give up certain exclusive rights normally associated with copyright while retaining others. There are six different licenses within Creative Commons that provide users with varying levels of freedom in using your work.

  4. What are the different types of Creative Commons licenses?

    • The six Creative Commons licenses offer different levels of freedom for users, allowing them to share, remix, or build upon your work, depending on the specific license you choose.

  5. A Quick Flowchart for Choosing Licenses:

Step 1: Do you want to retain full control over how your track is used?

  • Yes: Choose "All Rights Reserved."
  • No: Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Do you want to allow others to use your work with certain conditions?

  • Yes: Choose "Creative Commons."
  • No: Go back to "All Rights Reserved."

Step 3: Select the specific conditions for your Creative Commons license:

  • Attribution: Allows others to copy, distribute, display, and perform your work, but only if they give credit the way you request.
  • Noncommercial: Allows others to use, distribute, and perform your work for noncommercial purposes only.
  • No Derivative Works: Allows others to copy, distribute, and display only exact copies of your work, without making changes or creating derivatives.
  • Share Alike: Allows others to create derivative works, but only if they share them under the same license terms as your original work.
  • No Modifications: Choose a license that prohibits modifications.
