Sales Tax & VAT
Are taxes included in my SoundCloud subscription?
Depending on where you live, taxes will be included in the price of your SoundCloud subscription or not.
VAT is included in the advertised price in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.
In the US, some state and local governments require us to collect sales tax on top of the advertised price. These taxes are included at the point of the transaction, which is why you might see a slightly different price on your receipt to the rate that’s advertised.
You can always see the details of what you’re being charged by checking out your receipts:
- Sign in to your Subscriptions page.
- Scroll down to “Purchase history”.
- Select the order to see the receipt
How do I make my account 'tax exempt'?
To make your account tax exempt, if you're a non-profit or eligible company, contact our support team. Send a request with your exemption certificate and SoundCloud account details, and we'll verify your status. Once approved, future billings will be tax-exempt which will be reflected on your invoices. To start, click the chat bubble in the bottom-right corner, and our bot Otto will guide you through the process.
Why am I being charged taxes if I have a valid VAT number in the EU?
SoundCloud will include VAT to all subscriptions in the EU, however some users may be eligible for VAT exemptions. With the EU reverse charge mechanism, SoundCloud will remove VAT from your invoice, provided you have verified your VAT number during the checkout process. For eligible users, please ensure you click on the "add VAT and billing information" during the sign up process. The VAT number will be verified in real-time and if all goes well, you will see the deductions in the final check out screen.
Please note: users in the UK and Germany are not eligible for VAT-free purchases, as we are locally registered entities with operations in these countries, therefore VAT must be applied as expected.
How do I change my VAT number and update my billing address?
Credit Card users can update their VAT and billing info on the subscription settings page, here.
PayPal users can update their VAT and billing info in their PayPal account. Alternatively, cancel your subscription and resubscribe with your new details after it expires.
Will my future bills reflect the lower taxes in my new location?
Taxes are determined based on the location where you originally signed up for your subscription. If you move to a new state or country, taxes will still be charged according to your original location. To update your tax calculation to reflect your new location, you’ll need to cancel your upcoming renewal and sign up again with your current address. Local taxes will be applied based on the country and ZIP code entered during checkout
Why didn’t you charge me tax before?
Since the time when you made your original purchase, we became required to add sales tax to your price. This change was made on your account automatically. The tax rate is subject to change based on the laws in your jurisdiction.
How do you decide how much tax to charge me?
Tax rates are based on the tax laws where you live. SoundCloud determines where you live based on the country and the ZIP Code that you provided when you purchased your subscription.
If you've moved since you purchased your SoundCloud subscription and you want to update your payment details, please contact support.
What happens if added sales tax becomes required for my location?
If we become required to add sales tax for your location, the change will be made on your account automatically. All you need to do to accept it is keep using SoundCloud.
I never agreed to that price. Can I get a refund?
Your state or local government made the decision to make your purchase subject to added sales tax. We do not offer refunds based on changes to the tax law made in your jurisdiction.
