When uploading artwork for your distribution release on SoundCloud, you are responsible for ensuring you legally own the rights to that image. Using copyrighted, stock, or third-party images without permission may result in removal or delays in the release of your track.
Altering or heavily editing a copyrighted image does not automatically grant you the right to use it—permission is still required from the original copyright holder.
Provide Rights for Artwork
- If the image was created by someone else (designer, friend, or photographer).
- If you purchased or downloaded the image from a website or stock service.
- Whenever there’s a risk, the image is copyrighted, even if you made significant edits.
How to Provide Documentation
Currently, we do not have a separate documentation upload space for audio and artwork licenses, so artwork licenses can be uploaded with your track details in Step 1 of the distribution process.
Here's how to upload:
- Navigate to the Distribution tab within your SoundCloud for Artists account.
- Select the release in question.
- In Step One of the release creation process (1. Tracks), click the edit option located on the right-hand side of the track.
- Scroll down until you locate the section titled: Does this track require additional licenses? Here, you can upload the necessary documentation.
Acceptable Proof of Rights:
- A license agreement stating your right to use the image, including commercial use.
- A written statement or release from the artist, designer, or photographer.
- Proof of purchase from a stock photo service that includes the correct usage license.
- Screenshots of emails or messages clearly granting you permission from the copyright holder.
Best Practices for Artists
- Create artwork yourself or commission custom artwork with a written agreement.
- Always request and retain written permission or a release from any third party involved.
- Keep digital copies of all licenses or permissions for your records and potential verification.
