Sales Tax & VAT

Understanding how taxes affect your subscription helps you stay on top of your billing. Depending on where you’re located, taxes may be included in your subscription price or added at checkout.

Are taxes included in my SoundCloud subscription?

Whether taxes are included depends on your local laws:

  • EU, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand: VAT is already included in the advertised price.

  • United States: Some state and local governments require us to collect sales tax on top of the advertised price. You’ll see this reflected at the point of sale, which is why your receipt might show a slightly different total than the base rate.

You can always review exactly what you’re being charged by checking your receipts:

  1. Sign in to your Subscriptions page.

  2. Scroll down to Purchase history.

  3. Select the order to view the receipt.

How do I make my account tax-exempt?

If you’re a non-profit or an eligible company, our support team can help you set up tax-exempt status. You’ll need to send a request with your exemption certificate and SoundCloud account details so we can verify your status. Once approved, future billings will be tax-exempt.

Why am I being charged taxes if I have a valid VAT number in the EU?

SoundCloud includes VAT on all subscriptions in the EU, but some users may be eligible for exemptions. Under the EU reverse charge mechanism, we can remove VAT from your invoice if you verify your VAT number during checkout.

If you're eligible, make sure to click "add VAT" and "billing information" during the sign-up process. Your number will be verified in real time, and the deduction will appear on the final checkout screen.

Note: Users in the UK and Germany are not eligible for VAT-free purchases, as we are locally registered entities in these countries and must apply VAT as required.

How do I change my VAT number and update my billing address?

  • Credit Card users: You can update your VAT and billing info on your subscription page.

  • PayPal users: Update your info directly within your PayPal account. Alternatively, you can cancel your subscription and resubscribe with your new details once the current period expires.

Will my future bills reflect the lower taxes in my new location?

Taxes are based on the location where you originally signed up. If you move to a new state or country, you’ll still be charged based on your original location.

To update your tax calculation to reflect your new home, you’ll need to cancel your upcoming renewal and sign up again with your current address. Local taxes will then be applied based on the country and ZIP code you enter during checkout.

Why didn't you charge me tax before?

If you're seeing tax for the first time, it’s because we are now required by law to add sales tax to purchases in your area. This change is applied to accounts automatically, and rates may change based on local jurisdiction laws.

How do you decide how much tax to charge me?

Tax rates are determined by the laws in your region. SoundCloud determines your location based on the country and ZIP code you provided when you first purchased your subscription.

If you’ve moved and need to update your payment details, please reach out to us via our AI agent.

What happens if sales tax becomes required for my location?

If laws change and we are required to add sales tax for your area, the change will be applied to your account automatically. You don't need to take any action to keep using SoundCloud.

I never agreed to that price. Can I get a refund?

Because state or local governments determine when to subject purchases to additional sales tax, we do not offer refunds for changes in tax laws in your jurisdiction.
