Music publishing for vinyl release

Music publishing refers to the legal rights granted to songwriters and other composition rightsholders. Royalties must be paid whenever these rights are exploited.

Basic copyright law protects songwriters by giving them exclusive rights to grant or deny the reproduction, distribution, or performance of their original songs. When original music is written, and such songs are registered with collection societies, songwriters will be paid performance and mechanical royalties for the use of their music, which includes digital streaming, television, radio, live concerts, physical products, and more. Therefore, including accurate songwriter information with your vinyl release will ensure songwriters are paid.

Why is publishing information needed for my vinyl release?

When you’re building your vinyl release, you’ll edit the details for each track you add. One of the questions we’ll ask is if you own the publishing rights to your track. For each of the songwriters, you’ll want to include the name and registration number for both the Mechanical Rights Organization (MRO) and the Performing Rights Organization (PRO). This ensures that the right people get credited and paid.

What is a Mechanical Rights Organization (MRO)?

A Mechanical Rights Organization (MRO) is responsible for the administration of mechanical licenses, and they collect and pay out mechanical royalties to songwriters and publishers when songs are reproduced, including physical products, digital streaming, downloads, or television.

What is a Performing Rights Organization (PRO)?

A Performing Rights Organization (PRO) is responsible for collecting income on behalf of songwriters and music publishers when a song is publicly broadcast or performed. Public performances include digital streaming, plays on television or radio, in clubs and restaurants, on websites, or on other broadcasting systems.
